These Referral Program Terms ("Program Terms") govern Formation's "Give a month, get a month" referral program (the "Program"), operated by Formation Money LLC ("Formation," "we," "our"). The Program Terms supplement our Terms of Service; capitalized terms not defined here have the meanings given there. By sharing an invite link or accepting a referral credit, you agree to these Program Terms.
1. The Program
Every Formation member receives a personal invite link (available on the Profile page in the application). When someone new subscribes to Formation through your link and makes their first subscription payment, you (the "Referrer") and they (the "Referred Member") each receive an account credit as described in Section 4.
2. Eligibility
Referrers. Any Formation account holder in good standing may share their invite link, including members in a free trial who have not yet made a payment (see Section 4 for when a Referrer credit applies in that case).
Referred Members. The referral must be a genuinely new customer: a newly created Formation account, not a current member, a member of an existing subscriber's household, or a former member re-registering under a different email address. Referred Members must meet the Service eligibility requirements in the Terms of Service (at least 18 years old; U.S. residents).
3. How a referral is attributed
A referral is recorded when a new account signs up through your invite link, or when your referral code is otherwise recorded on an account within 7 days of that account's creation.
First touch wins. Each account can carry at most one referrer — the first referral recorded. Later codes do not overwrite it.
Referral codes cannot be applied retroactively to accounts more than 7 days old.
Self-referrals are not eligible — including referrals between accounts belonging to the same person or funded by the same payment method.
4. The reward
When. Credits are granted after the Referred Member's first successful subscription payment — for plans with a free trial, that is the first charge after the trial ends. Starting a trial alone does not generate a credit.
What. The Referrer and the Referred Member each receive an account credit equal to one month of the then-current monthly membership price shown on our pricing page at the time the credit is granted (while founding-member pricing is offered, the founding monthly rate).
Annual conversions. If the Referred Member's first payment is for an annual subscription, both credits are doubled — two months each.
How. Credits are applied automatically to each member's billing account balance with our payment processor (Stripe) and offset future subscription invoices — on annual plans, the credit reduces the next renewal invoice. No code entry or claim step is required.
Referrers who haven't subscribed yet. If you refer friends before making your own first payment, credits you earn are recorded and applied automatically when your own first subscription payment completes.
5. Limits
Each Referred Member (per person and per household) can generate one referral credit, once — the first paid subscription. Renewals, upgrades, plan changes, or re-subscriptions do not generate additional credits.
There is currently no cap on how many different people you may refer. We may introduce prospective limits (for example, a maximum number of credited referrals per year) by updating these Program Terms; credits already granted are unaffected.
Credits are promotional balance only: they have no cash value, are not transferable or redeemable for cash, cannot be applied to past invoices, and are forfeited when the associated account is closed or terminated for cause.
If the Referred Member's qualifying payment is refunded, disputed, or reversed, the related credits may be reversed.
6. Fair play
The Program exists so members can share Formation with people they actually know. The following are prohibited, and we may withhold or reverse credits, remove Program access, or suspend accounts where they occur:
Self-referral through alternate email addresses, accounts, or payment methods;
Spam or unsolicited bulk distribution of invite links (email, SMS, messaging platforms, or otherwise);
Paid advertising on Formation's brand terms, or presenting yourself as Formation or as acting on Formation's behalf;
Posting invite links on coupon, deal-aggregation, or discount-code sites;
Misleading claims about the Service, the Program, or the reward;
Any use of the Program that violates the Terms of Service or applicable law (including CAN-SPAM, the TCPA, and state equivalents when sending invitations).
7. Taxes
You are responsible for any tax consequences of credits you receive under the Program.
8. Changes and termination of the Program
We may modify, suspend, or terminate the Program (in whole or in part) at any time. Changes take effect when posted to this page, with the "Last updated" date revised. Credits already applied to an account are not affected by Program changes or termination; referrals that have not yet reached a first payment when the Program ends may not convert into credits.
9. General
The Program is void where prohibited. The Program and these Program Terms are governed by the Terms of Service, including its disclaimers, limitation of liability, and dispute-resolution provisions. Formation's decisions on referral attribution and credit eligibility are final, applied in good faith against the records described in Sections 3 and 4.
